9th Posting - Route 62 to Cape Town

Route 62 is a direct take-off of Route 66 in the US. However, here it is billed as the longest wine-route in the world and the scenery is dramatic as it constantly changes between Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo (semi-desert) to Cape Town on Table Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
Our first stop was just out of Oudtshoorn at De Hoop Dutch Reformed Church, dating back to 1909. Today they sponsor the Uplift Project, which hires about 20 poor people from the community to make crafts, predominantly from ostrich feathers and ostrich eggs. It's a huge boost to the community.
After giving us a little tour, we bought a few things, and then I asked if they would sing for us. They all got up, stood in a circle and put on a real performance for us, singing 3 songs. Fantastic!

Chrissie manages the shop and poses in front of ostrich feather boas.

Joyce models a white boa!

The gals at work.

Singing for us. Super!

White House Pass on Route 62

at Joyce's request!!

Ronnie's shop is an eclectic little place out along the highway which was always a bit quiet. One time while he was on vacation, some of his friends played a prank on him and added the word 'sex' to the name on the side of his building. Business increased, so he left it there and now it's quite a stop for tourists.

First view over the Cape Region from the top of Du Toitskloof Pass.
We are looking down at the town and wine region of Paarl.
